BIOGRAPHY

In November 1942, after four months of training, in aircraft maintenance, I was commission as 2nd Lieutenant. On Christmas morning, we boarded a troop ship at New Port VA and twenty-nine days via the Panama Canal, we docked at Brisbane, Australia. We traveled by train to Townsville, the southeastern tip of Australia, then on to Port Morseby in New Guinea. There I was assigned to the 5th Air Force, 35th Flight Group, 41st Fighter Squadron as Squadron Engineering Officer in charge of all air craft. We had three air fields. New Guinea- Nadzak, Tsilli Tsilli and Guasp. In November 1943, I was wounded by an exploding bomb during a daylight raid. The radar did not pick up the Jap planes and about the time we heard the planes we heard the bombs whistling on their way done. So I lay on the ground, as one exploded nearby me and I got some pieces of shrapnel in my chest. I guess they are still there as the doctor decided not to remove them. I was in the hospital for two months and joined my squadron at Iwo. From Iwo we moved to the Islands of - Noonfor, Mosati and on to the Philippines' in January 1945. During my time in the South Pacific I was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and then to Captain. "Courtesy of The Talmage Historical Museum & Library"

BIOGRAPHY

Charles Corneille Gabriel 'Carlo' Huyghé (11 March 1923 – 27 December 2016) was a Belgian national who served in the Belgium Army (1939-1940), the Belgian Armed Resistance (1941-1943), the Royal Air Force (1943-1945) and the Belgium Colonial Army (Belgian Congo) (1945-1962). Huyghé was the child of a Walloon father and a Flemish mother. Huyghe's father was a senior officer in the Belgium army posted in Koblenz, Germany as an area Commander as part of the Versailles treaty regulations. Huyghé spent his early years living in Germany, where he learned the language and his family had made many German friends over the years. During WWII enlisted as a young officer of the Belgian army he was captured during the German Blitzkrieg advancement into Belgium and France. Huyghé became a POW in a camp situated outside Koblenz. After a short period as a prisoner, his knowledge of German gave him certain privileges of freedom and movement, and allowed him to make an escape. He seeked help and refuge from an old German friend of the family. They were concerned of the recriminations that would befall the family by the Nazis if caught harboring a POW therefore they gave him some money and suggested that he should slip onto a Belgian bound train and take his chances on escape. In the early hours of the morning, Huyghé slipped onto a train in the Koblenz station marked for Liege in Belgium. He waited in a compartment for travelers to arrive. The train turned out to be a troop train transporting an SS Battalion to Liege. During the trip, two SS Officers moved into his compartment. With his knowledge of German and armed with a story of being a migrant worker, the two officers took a liking to Huyghé and shared their rations (and Schnapps) with him on the journey home. Standard train and papers searches fell outside the realms of an SS troop train and the young man made it safely to Liege. Charles spent the next few years fighting with the Belgian resistance and then escaped to Britain where he joined the RAF and operated as a tail gunner on Lancaster bombers.

BIOGRAPHY

Dale Iliff trained at Camp Adair, Oregon, with the 70th Recon Troop of the 70th Div. This Troop, called the Trailblazers, was then transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, before going overseas. On January 8, 1945, Iliff boarded a troop carrier, the converted luxury liner, Mariposa, bound for Marseilles, France. From his service autobiography, which is attached, "Each Platoon has 3 Sections. The lead Jeep was armed with a 30 caliber machine gun. The second was an 8 ton armored car with a 50 caliber machine gun and a 37 millimeter cannon mounted on RUBBER wheels, instead of tread like a tank. Very fast and maneuverable. The 3rd was a Jeep armed with 60 mm mortar. The Section had 10 armed men. We could move fast, hit hard and retreat fast. Our mission always to locate the enemy, estimate their fire power, and hold them 'til the foot soldier infantry could eliminate the problem. As I stated in the letter, which I wrote while I was still in Germany. After 30 days and nights on a Liberty Ship, I arrived home on my wife's birthday. I do not have the Luger that I captured."
