Dwight Eisenhower led the way by embracing television as a means of communicating his ideas to the voters and became known as the β€œTV President.” Students will look at different methods of persuasion by analyzing and comparing campaign ads from the 1950s to more recent times.

Rose Blanche

𝐉𝐀𝐍. πŸπŸ•, πŸπŸŽπŸπŸ” β€’ 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐒 πŸ•-𝟏𝟐: Roberto Innocenti, celebrated artist and illustrator, drew on his own World War II experiences as a child to create the book β€œRose Blanche.” This multi-award winning narrative revolves around Rose, a young German girl who discovers a terrible secret β€” Holocaust prisoners in a concentration camp near her village. Her humane response to this revelation leads to a tragic result. By analyzing the illustrations in this book, students will discover and discuss inferences and symbolism, as well as comparing events in the story to the actual events during WWII.

How Did the Holocaust Happen?

𝐉𝐀𝐍. πŸπŸ•, πŸπŸŽπŸπŸ” β€’ 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐒 πŸ•-𝟏𝟐: A systematic, yet subtle progression of laws and actions by Hitler and his collaborators resulted in the persecution and murder of millions of Jews and those labeled as β€œinferior” in the Holocaust. How and why did this happen? This program will examine these questions and how the Allied forces under the leadership of General Eisenhower helped put an end to this inhumanity.

Using historical documents and images, this program explores how Cold War priorities shaped lasting public health policy.

Interstate Highway

Therefore, as President he pass The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, the largest infrastructure project in U.S. history. Students will analyze primary sources to discover the history of one of President Eisenhower's most iconic programs.

πŒπ€π‘π‚π‡ πŸπŸ”, πŸπŸŽπŸπŸ” β€’ 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐒 πŸ“-𝟏𝟐: One of President Eisenhower's favorite hobbies was painting. As Americans enjoyed more leisure time in the 1950s, Paint by Number kits became very popular. This craze caught on in the White House, as well. Learn about the special exhibit created for President Eisenhower and how you can re-create one of Ike's paintings the paint by numbers way!

Documenting History

π€ππ‘πˆπ‹ πŸ•, πŸπŸŽπŸπŸ” β€’ 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐒 πŸ•-𝟏𝟐: As Supreme Allied Commander, General Dwight Eisenhower had the unimaginable experience of touring a Nazi concentration camp witnessing the horror that occurred there. The shock and disgust he felt compelled him to ensure that the Holocaust be documented for all to know and remember. Since then, some have questioned the legitimacy of the Holocalust. In this program students will analyze various types of primary sourcdes from General Eisenhower and others that give first-hand accounts of what they witnessed.

Fingerprint Forensics

π€ππ‘πˆπ‹ πŸπŸ”, πŸπŸŽπŸπŸ” β€’ 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐒 πŸ”-πŸ–: Put on your detective hat and step into the shoes of a 1950s crime scene investigator! In this hands-on forensic science program, students will take and examine their own prints using magnifying tools, identify common fingerprint patterns, and explore how fingerprint analysis helped solve real crimes during the Eisenhower Era.

Earth Day: Forecasting Victory

In this interactive program, students explore how Allied leaders used meteorology to time the invasion. They'll learn the basics of weather prediction and why a brief break in the storm made all the difference on June 6, 1944.
