Biography
James graduated from high school in 1941 and enlisted in the Marines the following spring. He started off as a paratrooper in the 3rd Division but only made six practice jumps in basic training. In 1944, the Marine paratroopers were disbanded, and he joined the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines. He fought the Japanese at Iwo Jima and was injured during this operation.
