BIOGRAPHY

Kramer entered the Army in Sept. 1940 and served as an enlisted soldier until he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, Signal Corps in March 1943 after attending OCS. He served with the 4th Infantry Division from July 1943 to February 1945 first as the communications officer for the 4th Recon. Troop, and later as a Recon. Platoon Leader from September 1944 - February 1945. He attended an Infantry Officer Course in the Spring of 1945 in Europe, and was then assigned to 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, as the Battalion Communications Officer. He was relieved from Active Duty in Dec. 1945 but was recalled to active duty in 1947 and retired as a Major in the Army Security Agency in May 1962. Thereafter he worked for the National Security Agency and then the NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center as a Computer Systems Analyst until his death in August 1974.

BIOGRAPHY

Jay Kramer was born May 21, 1925 in Clay County, Kansas, the son of John and Esther (Bruns) Kramer. He grew up in the Longford, KS area and graduated from Longford Rural High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. Jay married Betty Lou Beals on May 16, 1948 and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2006. The couple farmed in the Longford area until moving to Emporia in 1984, where Jay worked as a mail carrier. They later returned to Longford. Kramer enlisted in the Army at age 19. His basic training was in Texas. The bombs had been dropped in Japan and Kramer was part of the occupation efforts. He landed in Okinawa and rode a train to Tokyo, riding by parts of the devastation from the bombs. Kramer worked in communications for the Army Air Corps..

BIOGRAPHY

 

Eugene "Gene" Kramer left his home March 15, 1943 to join the Navy at age 17. He signed all his papers and they put him on a train to Farragut. Kramer did not even get to go back home to say good-bye. Boot camp was in Farragut, Idaho where he gradated in May and was transferred to Los Angeles for radio school. Training was until December 1943 and Kramer boarded his first ship, the S. S. Philip Kearny. Kramer served on board ships through out his Naval career by receiving messages transferring them into written messages that where passed on to the Bridge. His travels included Guadalcanal, Australia New Guinea Russell Island, New Hebrides, Hawaii, Guam, Okinawa and Siapan. Kramer was one of nine children, with eight boys and one girl in his family. He went to grade school in a one-room school house in Melvern, KS. Kramer and Lorraine Thompson Kramer were married June 9, 1946, and  had five children. The couple was married 73 years. Kramer started Kramer's Gas Station with his brother, John in 1959. He also worked for many years with Murray's TV in Paola.

BIOGRAPHY

Donald J Krueger was born March 2, 1921 to Mr. and Mrs. JW Kreuger of Hope, KS. He graduated from Hope high school in 1939. Krueger assisted his father in the shoe shop and helped operate the old Hope service station after graduation. He also worked for Dale Chalker and at the Elgin Hotel in Marion. On January 18, 1943, Krueger entered the NYA camp at Eskridge, and upon completion he accepted a defense job in Topeka, where he remained until his call to service. Krueger entered the service July 22, 1943. Placed in the Army Air Corps, Krueger reported to Ft. Leavenworth and was sent to Sheppard Field in Texas for basic training. He received further training in Los Angeles until his first station in Albuquerquean NM. No further information about his service is known.

BIOGRAPHY

Bob enlisted in the army at age 17 and entered the Army when he turned 18. He was in the 1264 Combat Engineer Battalion whose mission was to probe for mines and reconstruct bridges. His job was S1, an administrative position for his Division. Bob was impressed of the unity of effort in the was. He stated "Ike was a remarkable leader!"

BIOGRAPHY

John was drafter when he had already married and had a child. He landed at Normandy beach and was helping in  construction of the artificial harbor, "the Mulberry". He was blown out into the English channel by the storm and rescued by an Allied Ship. After VE, he was set to the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of Japan.

John Kueser passed in 2006.
