KIA February 9, 1942. Delbert Lee Holan, son of John and Mary Holan, was born July 24, 1918 at Narka, Kansas and was killed in action in defense of his country in the Far East Theater of war on February 9,1942, at the age of 23 years, 6 months, and 15 days. He grew to manhood at Narka where he attended high school, graduating in 1935 with a scholarship average of 93.6 per cent. He was also active in high school activities, lettering in track and basketball and participating in other events. In the Spring of 1935, he and his mother went to Santa Ana, California where he found employment which enabled him to enter college in 1936. He was graduated from the Santa Ana Junior College with the title of Associate of Arts in letters and science. He continued with graduate work in physical science and aviation in San Jose College until his enlistment in the U.S. Army Air Corps in December, 1940. He was called into service in February, 1941, and was commissioned a second lieutenant with assignment as a navigator in the Air Corps. He was the youngest of 10 children; nine of which grew to adulthood. Delbert was the second casualty of Republic County, Kansas in WWII. He was decorated with the Purple Heart. BIOGRAPHY

Donald E. Hollenbeck graduated from high school in February 1943 and entered into the army the following month. He was in basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and was then sent overseas to Belgium until his death in December 1944. His unit was stationed in Trois Ponts, Belgium where a bridge leading to another major town was located. The German troops were eager to cross this bridge and take control of both major towns along the route. One of the American guns that was defending the area got stuck along the route and Hollenbeck's unit commander ordered that he and the other three men that were in control of the gun stay behind until the bridge route was completely demolished and cut off from the Germans. Hollenbeck and his compatriots knew that they were on a suicide mission and after fifteen minutes of holding off the German troops, an explosion occurred behind the four-man gun crew destroying the bridge along with the gun. Hollenbeck and the other three men were killed in the explosion that stopped the Germans from pursuing the way forward through Trois Ponts.
