BIOGRAPHY

Henry "Harry" Carey was born on a ranch near the Saugus Neighborhood of Santa Clarita, CA, son of Harry Carey Sr. a film actor. Harry Carey, Jr., grew up among cattle and horses at the ranch. Because of a large group of Navajo Indians who worked on his parents' ranch, he learned to speak the Navajo language at the same time that he was learning to speak English. Carey attended school at Newhall Public and later attended Black Foxe Military Institute in Hollywood. After the war broke out, Carey enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and he served in the Pacific Theater as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class. However, he was transferred back to the United States (against his wishes) to serve under his father's good friend, the director John Ford, in making movies for the Navy (training films)and the O.S.S. (propaganda films).  The O.S. S. was the predecessor to the CIA. After his time in the service, Carey went on to follow his Father as an actor. He made several films with John Wayne. BIOGRAPHY

Terence Carlson grew up in Kansas and attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS. He played football and graduated in 1943. He enlisted into the Navy, gaining training on diesel engines before sailing to Europe on a large LSD, flat bottom boat. When his boat would unload at port, the only way to do so was to let it "List" which was to let the boat tip to one side. The boat would sit in the water at an angle and be stable. Carlson, who worked in the engine room was part of making this maneuver happen. Carlson served in Europe but was sent home just before VE day, During his pending time in Norfolk, he was married and then shipped out for the Pacific war. Courtesy of KSN TV.

BIOGRAPHY

Homer Carlson was born on a farm near Lindsborg, KS. He grew up in the Lindsborg area and entered the military on September 19,1941. Carlson was in the Army Air Corp and trained to be an airplane mechanic. The China/Burma/India region was where he was stationed. Carlson flew with his crew over the "hump" delivering supplies to the allies. On one particular flight, the plane had issues with freezing and the crew was forced to parachute. The crew landed in a jungle but were able to find each other and together they located a stream, which they followed down to a more civilized area. Luckily they found an American Post and safety. After the war Carlson returned to Lindsborg and began to farm with his brother Terence.

BIOGRAPHY

Alden L. Carney was born and raised in Abilene, Kansas. He married Maxine Joyce Hastings in 1938 and they had two children, Cynthia and Alden Jr., prior to entry in to the 11th Airborne. The 11th Airborne was activated at Camp Mackall, NC February 25, 1943. May 1944 the division sailed from San Francisco to New Guinea where they spent an additional five months training in the jungle warfare in preparation for the liberation of the Philippines. In November 1944 the 11th Airborne landed on Leyte Beach in the Philippines. The 511th PIR was sent to clear the mountains lf Leyte, it was raining the day they landed and continued to rain almost every day of the campaign. The fighting was fierce and unrelenting for the next month. After clearing the mountains of Leyte they began the march onto Manila. Dad's first combat jump was January 3, 1945 onto Tagaytay Ridge. Dad's second combat jump was February 22, 1945 on Los Banos prison camp. This became a textbook combat jump, all 2,147 internees were rescued while all 247 Japanese guards were killed and one US wounded. The fight for southern Luzon continued with the battle for Mt. Malepunyo wrapping up the major fighting in April 1945. The 11th Airborne was preparing for the invasion of Japan when Peace was negotiated and the 11th Airborne was ultimately sent to Hokkaido. Alden received the following citations: Army Good Conduct, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Campaign with four bronze stars Arrow Head, Philippine Liberation with two bronze stars, and WWII Victory. Following the war Alden married H. June Webber and they moved to Indio, CA where they raised five children; Richard, Dennis, Carol, Barbara, and Debra. Dad was very reluctant to speak about the war. However, he was very proud of his accomplishment as a Paratrooper.

BIOGRAPHY

Upon his induction into the Army, Leland Carr scored well on a test which qualified him for special Signal Corps training. He spent over a year at Camp Crowder, Missouri where he learned to operate a teletype machine and was trained to send secret coded messages. Eventually promoted to the rand of Sergeant, Leland was sent to the United Kingdom in March, 1944 on the Queen Mary which had been converted from a luxury liner into a troop transport which could carry as many as 16,000 personnel. After arriving in Scotland, he traveled south to London where he was assigned to the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force. For some time Leland worked in the sub-basement of Selfridge's Department store sending top secret messages, and he narrowly avoided death or serious injury when a V-2 missile hit nearby on 6 December 1944, killing several of his friends who were waiting for him upstairs. Sergeant Carr returned to Texas in December of 1945 where he raised a family.

BIOGRAPHY

Lyle Carr, husband to, Vernie, was in the Army and was evidently a very good soldier. He made Staff Sergeant quickly and stayed in the States in a training capacity until late in 1944. He was sent to England and his unit boarded two ships for the trip across the channel to France on Christmas Day 1944. The other ship was torpedoed by a submarine with 100% loss of life before reaching France. This was a major wake up call for him that luck was a huge factor in surviving. The winter in Europe in 1944-45 was one of the coldest on record and he was never in a building until the war was over, May 8, 1945. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded in the neck, shoulder and arm from shrapnel while in a boat crossing the Rhine River into Germany. He said if the war had lasted one more day, he would have been field-promoted to Second Lieutenant. After he died, his sons were getting ready for his funeral and opened a trunk they had never seen. In it was his Bronze Star with combat V device. He never told anyone he had won the Bronze Star, only the fact he had been wounded! Lyle Carr, circa 1943
