BIOGRAPHY

Thomas V. Bohnyak enlisted in the Army on November 30, 1940. It was said in his obituary that he was the first boy in his hometown of Jamesburg, New Jersey to enlist. Second Lt. Bohnyak graduated from Officer's Candidate School at Fort Benning Georgia in October 1942. He was then sent to various army camps to instruct and train his men. He was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division, 28th Infantry Regiment. In November the 8th Infantry Division arrived in Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. On December 5, 1943 a convoy bearing the 8th Division sailed from New York to Belfast, Ireland. Ten days later the division arrived in Belfast, North Ireland, where a varied program of training was instigated, with emphasis being placed on small unit tactics. While there the division was inspected by General Dwight D. Eisenhower and General George Patton. On July 1, 1944, a convoy of four troops ships and twelve motor transports steamed out of Belfast harbor, carrying the 8th Division to the continent of Europe. On July 4, twenty eight days after the D-Day invasion of the Normandy coast, the Division began debarking at Utah Beach on the Cherbourg peninsula. Two days later it had assembled in the vicinity of Monteburg, where final preparations for battle were completed. The 8th fought its way through France. Thomas Bohnyak lost his life at a battle near the Ay River on July 16, 1944. He is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. Plot A Row 23 Grave 10. Lt. Thomas V. Bohnyak was awarded a Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife Honey Bohnyak and his son Taylor Thomas Bohnyak.

BIOGRAPHY

Richard Norman Bolling was born in Huntington, WV on August 6, 1926, to Carl Levering and Mary Letiti. His siblings Carl Jr and Anna Marie Curtis. Bolling was married to his wife of 66 years, Ella Juanita. He was a 1943 graduate of Huntington High School, where he was inducted into the HHS "Hall of Fame" for outstanding career achievement at their 1986 Centennial celebration. Following high school, he enlisted in the Army Specialized Training Program and was assigned to Ohio State University to study engineering. As the U.S. Offensive in the Pacific reached full steam, the Army found Rifleman to be in more critical supply than Engineer trainees, so he was called to active service on his 18th birthday and trained for Infantry Replacement Duty in the South Pacific. He served with the 169th Infantry, 43rd Division in New Guinea, Leyte, the invasion of Luzon, and the initial occupation of Japan. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Battle Stars, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star, and the Army of Occupation Japan Ribbon. He returned to civilian life in 1946. Soon after, he met and married the love of his life, the former Juanita Baisden. Continuing his education at Georgia Tech as a coop student, he graduated in 1950 with a BS in Industrial Engineering. BIOGRAPHY

David Bontrager was born July 3, 1926 in Springer, NM. His family moved to Kansas and Bontrager attend school in Reno Co. KS. He attended two years of High School at Partridge, KS before being drafted into the Army. He entered the Army at Fort Leavenworth KS and at the encouragement of his brother (already serving) he volunteered to be a parachute rigger for the Paratroopers. It also paid $50 extra to do this job which was a bonus. David did have to make jumps and learn what jumpers do. Along with packing rigs for paratroopers he taught them how to get ready to jump. Bontrager became a squad leader and completed his military service in the United States. He did use the GI Bill to take pilot lessons when he returned home. Bontrager married and had three children. When he was in the service he had three brothers that where serving at the same time. Dan, Ira and Eli. All returned home safe and had families. BIOGRAPHY

Dan Bontrager was born in Haven, KS the oldest son. He entered the service as a conscientious objector, which is one who is opposed to serving in the armed forces and/or bearing arms on the grounds of moral or religious principles. His family had Amish beliefs but at that time, there was little support for Conscientious objectors and Dan withdrew the rating. Bontrager's duty was a truck driver for medic's in the European Theater. He drove across France taking supplies and moving wounded for the Army. He knew German and this skill was used often by his company. Dan had three other brothers that served in WW 2, all returning home safely. Ira Bontrager was born in 1920 and spent most of his early years in Reno Co, Kansas. He was in the Navy during WW 2, attending Para-trooper school and becoming a parachute packer/rigger. He spent most of his service time around the Panama Canal and the Galapagos Islands. Bontrager had three brothers in the service at the same time. His brother, David Bontrager speaks about his service briefly at the end of his interview. Ira Bontrager returned home safely and became a carpenter for Hutchinson schools and later the Hutchinson Community College.

BIOGRAPHY

Eli Bontrager was born in Springer, NM in 1924. His family moved to Kansas and he spent his early years around Reno County Kansas. He was drafted into the service, joining the Navy and becoming a gunner on a tanker. Twenty men severed on the tanker which fueled ships in the Pacific. Bontrager crossed the equator around 20 times to deliver fuel. At one point he had not been on land for around one year. Upon returning back to New York he found it difficult to walk after all the time at sea. He and his friend decided to walk about New York City and encountered some girls. The men were in awe and a little shy after the long hiatus without seeing females. Bontrager served at the same time as his three brothers. His brother, David Bontrager, speaks of Eli's service briefly at the end of his own interview. Eli and all of his brothers returned home safely.
