Biography

James W. Sapp enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 20, 1942. As a Pvt., Sapp was transferred from basic training at Camp Sutton, North Carolina, to Camp McCoy in Wisconsin, with Co. B., 1st Bn., 301 Ordnance Regiment. The 301st was the nation's first ordnance regiment. Their mission was to design and repair trucks, tanks, tractors, and other motorized war equipment on the battlefield. The 301st was the first unit of its kind ever formed in the U.S. Army, and was comprised almost totally of former automobile dealers, mechanics, salesmen, and clerks whose businesses closed after war was declared.
