BIOGRAPHY
Kenneth "Kenny" Alvin Edwards was born June 25, 1924, in Herington, Kansas, the son of Walter and Viola (Schaffer) Edwards. He grew up in Herington with his two siblings and graduated high school. Marrying at age 18 to Evelyn Knox, Kenny was drafted into the U.S. Navy at 19 and assigned number 8660492. He was in the Seabees or Naval Construction Battalions. He was a part of ACORN (Aviation, Construction, Ordnance, Repair) 17. He was stationed in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands during World War II. He served in the battle of Tarawa from November 20-23, 1943. After his discharge, Kenny worked for the Rock Island Railroad, working as a mechanic then as supervisor. The family moved to Kansas City in 1965, Kenny retired from Rock Island in 1986. He was a former member of the United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge in Herington. Kenny was a member of the V.F.W., a loyal Royals Fan, and he loved to catch, relocate and release squirrels. He enjoyed woodworking and could do almost anything mechanical, even making horse trailers. Kenny was a good family man with three children, 8 grandchildren, and at least 11 grandchildren.
