BIOGRAPHY
James "Jimmy" Carter was born Oct 1, 1924 in Plains, GA. He lived with his family on a 360 acre peanut farm. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1946, with distinction, and started his career as an officer on the USS Wyoming and the USS Mississippi, testing new technologies at sea. After two years of ship duty. He served as executive officer, engineering office and electronics repair officer. Carter did not see combat and was on a ship when he learned of the bombs dropped on Japan. He learned to fly the Navy's seaplanes, trained on old battleships and learned to man 40-mm anti-aircraft guns. Carter applied for submarine duty. When Admiral Hyman G. Rickover started his program to create nuclear-powered submarines, Carted wanted to join the program and was selected by Rickover. Carter was promoted to lieutenant and served on temporary duty with the Naval Reactors Branch, US Atomic Energy Commission, Washington DC to assist in the design and development of nuclear propulsion plants for naval vessels. Carter did not get assigned to a submarine as he returned home when his father became ill, was given an honorable discard and took over the family business.
