About

This confidential after-action report documents the 115th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division during the Normandy campaign in June 1944. The report begins with the regiment’s D-Day landing on Omaha Beach on June 6. The 1st and 2nd Battalions landed near Fox Green Beach and advanced inland despite mines, artillery, mortar, and small-arms fire. The regiment then fought through Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, Longueville, the Elle River area, and toward Saint-Lô, encountering determined German resistance, counterattacks, and armored forces.

The report also identifies German units encountered and records the human cost of the fighting. Its casualty table lists 1,177 casualties among the regiment and attached medical personnel during June, including 236 killed in action, 267 seriously wounded, and 463 lightly wounded. The regiment also reported evacuating 193 German prisoners and burying approximately 100 enemy dead. The final sections document awards for valor, including seven Silver Stars, twelve Bronze Stars, and sixty-one Purple Hearts, and describe individual acts of bravery by soldiers and medical personnel. The report provides a detailed firsthand military record of the 115th Infantry’s progression from the D-Day beaches into the difficult hedgerow fighting of Normandy.
