Vaughn Ayres was born in Tescott, Kansas, to Mr. and Mrs. John W. Ayers. He registered with the U.S. selective service in Omaha, Nebraska, on October 16, 1940, and was working for the International Harvester Co.

Ayres was inducted into the Army at Fort Riley, Kansas.
