Biography

Milton Fleming was born in Herington, Kansas, in 1923. He graduated Herington High School in 1941. Fleming was drafted and he joined the Navy. After training, he was stationed in Guam as a radioman. Fleming became the chief communications man, intercepting Japanese communications, decoding, and sending on for interpretation. Admiral Nimbus visited Fleming frequently checking on transmissions from the Japanese. Fleming also meet General Eisenhower while in Gaum, and the two men connected, both being from Dickinson County, Kansas. After the war, Fleming returned to Herington and married Verda Mae Miltz. They had two children. Milton is well know in Herington as he painted two murals on buildings in the small town. One mural is documented in his files.
