Biography
Melvin Doane was born on February 8, 1925, in Ringwood, Oklahoma. After graduating, he worked hard milking cows on an Air Force base in Enid, Oklahoma. He joined the Army when he was 19 years old and was stationed at the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, which is only 30 miles from Russia and Japan. His duties were to type hourly reports provided by the military police. Melvin got sick, likely with the mumps. A sulfa medicine was given to him that made him sick and eventually caused his eardrums to rupture. Melvin was sent home to take care of his health and was stationed at Fort Sill Army base in Lawton, Oklahoma, until discharged in October 1946. He married the love of his life, Joyce, and they had five children. The family lived in Severy, Kansas.
