Biography

Lowell Reed was born northwest of Hope, Kansas, on a farm to Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Reed. He attended elementary school in Navare, Kansas, and graduated from high school in the class of 1937 from Enterprise, Kansas. Reed was a distinguished member of 4-H in Dickinson County, Kansas, with a health record of outstanding recognitions. He won the right to represent the county at the state health contest in Manhattan, winning the livestock championship. Reed went on to the livestock exposition in Chicago in a national contest where he placed fifth.

After high school, Reed worked for two years in the bank at Enterprise, Kansas, then went to college at both McPherson and Emporia. He quit school when he knew he would have to go to the Army. He worked at home until he got the call. There was a long delay, so he entered the business college at Salina and accepted a job at a bank to meet expenses. Reed entered the Army on April 18, 1942.
