Biography

Henry “Harry” Carey was born on a ranch near the Saugus Neighborhood of Santa Clarita, CA, son of Harry Carey Sr. a film actor. Harry Carey, Jr., grew up among cattle and horses at the ranch. Because of a large group of Navajo Indians who worked on his parents’ ranch, he learned to speak the Navajo language at the same time that he was learning to speak English. Carey attended school at Newhall Public and later attended Black Foxe Military Institute in Hollywood. After the war broke out, Carey enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and he served in the Pacific Theater as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class. However, he was transferred back to the United States (against his wishes) to serve under his father’s good friend, the director John Ford, in making movies for the Navy (training films)and the O.S.S. (propaganda films). The O.S. S. was the predecessor to the CIA. After his time in the service, Carey went on to follow his Father as an actor. He made several films with John Wayne.
