Harold Armold of Chapman, KS was taked as prison of war during World War II. He was captured in the Philippines and was taken to the Zenusi Prison Camp. Armold wrote a few letters to his sister Mrs. W. A. Smiley in Junction City, KS during his capture. Armold was captured in January and Mrs, Smiley received cards in August, September and October. At one point a short wave radio broadcast was sent with the speaker stating he was Harold Armold. In the broadcast he spoke of another serviceman from Clifton, KS. They both were doing well and he sent good wishes to his brothers and the Delta force. The war department ruled it propaganda as they could not verify it was Harold Armold speaking or any of the information. Another card was received by Mrs. Smiley from the Red Cross stated of Armold’s release. Mrs. Smiley went to California to greet her brother upon his arrival back to the states. Armold was to receive medical treatment and evaluation but he worte his sister he felt fine and hoped to continue on home and enjoy Christmas. Courtesy of The Dickinson County Heritage Center.
