D-Day 75th Film Series: "The Longest Day"

Tuesday, June 4, 2019

This monumental account of the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, is a classic among WWII films. "The Longest Day" is Hollywood's definitive D-day movie. Producer Darryl F. Zanuck's epic 1962 account is the only one to attempt the daunting task of covering that fateful day from all perspectives. From the German high command and front-line officers to the French Resistance and all the key Allied participants, the screenplay by Cornelius Ryan, based on his own authoritative book, is as factually accurate as possible. The battles are spectacular, and the landings on Omaha Beach show the sheer scale and audacity of the invasion. John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Sean Connery, and Richard Burton, are just a few of the Hollywood stars featured. Some stars were World War II veterans, including Henry Fonda, Rod Steiger and Richard Todd (as Maj. John Howard) who fought at Normandy on D-Day while a member of the British Air Force, landing via a highly dangerous parachute drop.
