I Pledge Allegiance
President Eisenhower played a significant role in the flag we see today. He was, in fact, the only U.S. President to serve under three different flags! As our country unites to celebrate the 250th signing of the Declaration of Independence, The Eisenhower Foundation and IKEducation is offering educators the opportunity to receive a free U.S. flag along with many resources to enhance student understanding and appreciation for the symbol of our country.

K-2nd
Our Flag: A Symbol of Our Nation
The flag of the United States is full of symbols that represent America and its values. Over time, the flag has changed as our nation has grown. Students will learn the story of our flag, its symbolism, and what it means for America.
3rd-5th
Stars of Persuasion
During his presidency, Eisenhower added the states of Alaska and Hawaii to our nation. How should this be reflected in the American flag? Many Americans sent designs and letters to Ike, hoping to persuade him to choose their design. Students will explore those primary resource letters and then try their hand at persuading the president to choose a new flag design.
6th-8th
Stars of Freedom
Like our flag, President Eisenhower embodied America’s core values of bravery, freedom, and justice. How do we show our respect and patriotism for the flag and all that it represents? Students will learn the fundamentals of U.S. flag etiquette and come away with a deeper understanding of this national symbol.
9th-12th
Transforming the Flag
While it is a fun fact that Eisenhower is the only President to have served under three different American flags, changing the flag is a serious process. Students will be introduced to the government process that must be followed and examine primary source documents from the transformations that occurred under Eisenhower.
