Dwight D. Eisenhower's 129th birthday

Monday, October 14, 2019

Several events at the Eisenhower Presidential Library this month commemorate Ike's birthday. Dwight David Eisenhower was born October 14, 1890, in Denison, Texas, the third of seven sons of David and Ida Eisenhower. In 1892, his family returned to Abilene, Kansas, where Ike grew up, graduated high school, and worked until he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1911. Throughout his life, as Supreme Allied Commander in World War II and two terms as President of the United Sates, Ike maintained close ties to his hometown. Ike returned to Abilene, Kansas, following World War II and remarked in his homecoming speech on June 22, 1945, "The proudest thing I can claim is that I am from Abilene."
