  1. Ike Book TALK: "The Worst Hard Time," by Timothy Egan

    September 10, 2018, 7:00 PM @ Visitors Center Auditorium

The dust storms that terrorized the High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since. In "The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl," Timothy Egan documents stories of those who were unable or unwilling to leave their farms and towns, and their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black dust blizzards, crop failure, and loss of loved ones. Egan also pays tribute to agronomist Hugh Hammond Bennett whose vision of soil conservation districts and restored grasslands gave hope of avoiding a repeat of one our nation's greatest environmental disasters. Titles in this year's Ike Book Talk series, in partnership with the 2018 Humanities Kansas Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK) series are available to check out from the Abilene Public Library or for purchase at the Eisenhower Presidential Library gift shop. The programs are free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
