  1. Ike Book Talk: "Letters of a Woman Homesteader" by Elinore Pruitt Stewart

    May 14, 2018, 7:00 PM @ Visitors Center Auditorium

"Letters of a Woman Homesteader" by Elinore Pruitt Stewart offers a female perspective on the American frontier experience. This collection of letters chronicle the life of a young widow as she traveled west with her small daughter to Wyoming, taking a job as housekeeper for a Scottish cattleman, whom she eventually married. The letters were written from 1909 to 1913 to her former employer in Denver who showed them to a friend at "The Atlantic Monthly" magazine, where they were first published in 1914. Stewart's vivid stories of humor, tragedy and memorable characters who lived and worked in the Burntfork area of Wyoming in the early twentieth century captivated readers. She continued to write for publication and used the royalties to purchase much needed ranch supplies and equipment. The original ranch house is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
