Evenings at Ease: "Big Week: The Biggest Air Battle of WWII" with English WWII historian James Holland

Tuesday, November 20, 2018

In the early days of 1944, as the build-up to D-Day intensified, an audacious plan was taking shape. The aim was to smash the main factories and production centers of the Luftwaffe and at the same time draw the German fighter force into battle. Officially called Operation ARGUMENT, this aerial offensive quickly became known as “Big Week.” A massive airborne assault was unleashed in February with the Americans launching thousand-bomber raids by day while the RAF attacked at night. As 2018 marks the 100th Anniversary of the RAF, acclaimed World War II historian James Holland has chronicled the massive air battle through interviews, oral histories, diaries, and official records. Holland follows the fortunes of pilots, crew, and civilians on both sides, taking readers from command headquarters to fighter cockpits to anti-aircraft positions and civilian chaos on the ground. In the end, the six days of intense air battles largely cleared the skies of enemy aircraft for the D-Day invasion.
