Because of the popularity of IKEducation's Dogs for Defense programs for elementary students, we are proud to offer Hero Hounds on October 23rd. This event will celebrate Military Working Dogs from World War II, Vietnam, and current day.

During this event, students will:

  • Hear the story of Chips from Robin Hutton, author of War Animals: The Unsung Heroes of World War II and John Wren, civilian owner of Chips.
  • Hear John Burnam, author of A Soldier's Best Friend, tell stories about his German Shepherd Scout Dog, Clipper, saving lives during the Vietnam War, and the creation of a National War Dogs Monument.
  • View a presentation and demonstration of today’s military working dogs by the U.S. Army’s 523rd MWD detachment, 97th Military Police Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas.
  • Participate in IKEducation’s Dogs for Defense lessons and activities.

There is a limited number of spots available, so register now at K-12 Field Trips  or by calling 785-263-6771.
