Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day - Movie: "They Were Expendable"

Thursday, December 7, 2017

Ranked as one of the finest World War II films, "They Were Expendable" is based on a book by William L. White about the real-life heroics of PT Boat squadron leader John Bulkeley and the defense of the Philippines from December 1941 to April 1942. Bulkeley is portrayed byRobert Montgomery as Lt. Brickley. "They Were Expendable" was directed by John Ford who experienced war first-hand in the Naval Reserve. Robert Montgomery drew on his service as an actual PT commander at Guadalcanal and Normandy. A number of the cast and crew had just returned from combat, lending the film authenticity. Released on December 7, 1945, the film also features John Wayne, Donna Reed, Ward Bond and Cameron Mitchell. Did you know? * Actor Robert Montgomery later served as President Eisenhower's television coach. * The Eisenhower Presidential Library holds the papers of Admiral Bulkeley. * A special selection of Bulkeley papers will be on display in the Visitors Center Auditorium for the day!
